A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
