A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
