The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
